Harold and Maude (Criterion Collection)

In my All-Time Top Ten
The editor's review of this film is a fair enough description of the plot. One should add that, despite being made in 1971, the movie manages not to look dated, precisely because it makes such fun of the early 70s style, and that the acting by the three main characters (Harold, Maude and Harold's mother) is simply inspired. Ruth Gordon is splendid of course, while Bud Cort gives a lifetime performance, but it is the portrayal of Harold's mother by Vivian Pickles (what a splendid name for someone in the role) that has to be the most undercelebrated aspect of this film. Her breezy blitheness, outraged exasperation, and British sensibility are all just too wonderful.

But before I go on ...

NOTE: It has been been pointed out to me that since some would consider this review to contain spoilers that I ought to warn people ahead of time. However, I'll add that it's hard to say how much spoilers actually spoil this movie; spoilers may help to make the movie's wisdom...

superb DVD production
A lot of great movies have been poorly digitized or otherwise transfered to DVD without sufficient care and attention, but I was pleasantl surprised by the quality of this one. They found (or restored) a very clean and clear original print of the film and then digitally captured it beautifully. The soundtrack has also been enhanced with a remix of the Cat Stevens songs to take advantage of the stereo front speakers and the subwoofer. A wonderful movie, well presented.

fantastic
I had heard about this movie through friends but was never impressed by the story. A reclusive anti social kid who befriends and falls in love with an elderly (though young at heart) eccentric. I wrote it off completely til I saw a bit of it on television and thought it was hilarious and as it turns out I rented the movie and was extremely hooked. Harold is a rich kid with a high strung, selfish mother who tries anything to find a suitor for him, in turn Harold escapes from his home to overshadow funeral processions and memorials. At a number of these events, Maude is in attendence and she lights up the scene with her off the wall, and positively upbeat personality that horrifies and amuses Harold. After a while they become unlikely friends. Maude helps Harold live a little and in turn he develops true affection to Maude. With Ruth Gordon's charm and incredible acting abilites, and Cat Steven's classy soundtrack, its not hard to find yourself feeling happy and free after the movie is...

Monster Brawl

A monster movie that plays like A UFC pay-per-view. Not a horrible movie and kinda entertaining. But overall nothing to it
"Tonight the most anticipated extreme sporting event ever." 8 monsters, including Frankenstein and Cyclops, square off in a UFC type movie to determine who is the toughest monster of them all. There really is nothing to review here. The movie is pretty much a back story of the two fighters and then the fight. Think "Celebrety Deathmatch" meets "Bubba Ho-tep". This is kind of entertaining and a little funny but really nothing more then watching "Wrestlemania" with horror monsters. Since that is all this is there is really nothing more to say and since there is no real substance it is hard to review. I won't give it a grade but I will say that if you are a fun of cheesy monster movies and UFC then this is made for you.

Don't be tempted by this turdfest
If you are like me and like this kind of movies you might be tempted to buy or rent. Don't do it ! You will be very dissapointed at the movie and wasting your movie. Just AWEFUL !!!!!

Act of Valor

Wow!!!
I know some people will think this movie shouldn't have gotten 5 stars because of the acting. I did not go to this movie for the acting, I went to see our real life Navy Seals pay tribute to those who sacrificed everything for our country, and I was not disappointed.

I have read several books by Seals and about Seals over the years, starting way back when Dick Marcinko's first book came out, and I always watch any movie or tv special about them. I feel it takes a special kind of person to do this job and it fascinates me.

This movie has a fictional plot; however, the extractions and sacrifices in the movie all have actually happened in the field and they are re enacted in this movie in different locations. How awesome was it to sit their and watch the things I had imagined in my head in real life. I say real life, because these are things they actually do, real technology actually used, real split second decisions actually made. The action was fantastic and...

Saw It Yesterday...Saw It Again Today...Would Buy It Tomorrow
This one really grabbed me. It reminded me of the same emotions I had watching Taking Chance(also recommended). This movie was harder to watch the second time, but man, do I love this film. I am a retired Chief who served on submarines. Everything I saw that related to my career was absolutely accurate. I imagine the rest of the film was just as credible. I sure admire these military folks!

About as real of a movie as it gets.
You might notice the date for this post is two weeks before launch. that is because I am part of the military and was invited to an advance showing of this movie.

Non-spoiler summary: Act Of valor is based around SEAL Team 7 sometime around September 2010. This is a fictionalized film, these events really did not happen but they are based on events that have happened to SEALS since the war on terrorism. In 2007 the two directors of this film, Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh, worked on a film project where the navy allowed them to work with real Navy SEALS. The directors came out with an idea to make a realistic movie based on the Navy SEALS. While deciding on casting they decided that the only people they wanted playing the Seals were the Seals they met themselves. Act of Valor uses real Navy SEALS and at times real ammunition in some of the fire fight scenes.

If you have not seen this film I definitely recommend to at least rent it. It is not a documentary but it is...

Missing: The Complete First Season

A really good show....Too bad there will be NO SEASON 2.
I came across this show on ABC, at the very beginning of it's 1st episode. It sucked me in, and became a "must watch" show for my wife and I. Excellently written, and keeps you thinking and guessing "What's going to happen next?" Good acting, good storyline, and filmed in some cool locations. After tomorrow's final episode of Season 1, it looks like there will NOT be a Season 2 (so that I've read). It's too bad, and considering some of the shows that have been renewed, ABC should be ashamed of themselves for not renewing Missing! I give ABC, ZERO STARS for not renewing it.

Ashley Judd strikes again
Remember the good ole days, sitting on the couch watching "Double Jeopardy", "Kiss the Girls" and even "High Crimes" only to wonder several years later, "Where has Ashley gone?" After her so-called "retirement" from making movies (I put it in quotes because that's what she calls it), a humanitarian mission that leads her to 13 countries, and a book that tells us all what she's been up to out of the spotlight, Ashley Judd comes back with a bang in ABC's "Missing". While we're not used to seeing her on the smaller screen, I love the fact that we get a new episode each and every week that features my favorite actress. Each episode shocks me and inspires me. Everytime the show ends, I have an outburst of "WHAT?! What happens next?!?!" The show is thrilling, fast-paced, and always leaves me wanting more. The cast has been superb and while Judd is the biggest name in the credits, don't think you won't be pulled in by the other characters as well. Adriano Giannini is excellent as Giancarlo...

Fun and fast paced
Though I only started watching this show because I was missing Sean Bean on Game of Thrones, I got rather sucked in! The filming locations all over Europe add a definite something special, and the pace is very quick which makes it somehow more involving. I like the actors, though I find Ashley Judd to be a bit stiff. I just read that the series was cancelled, which is disappointing, but it was still a fun ride worth watching if you like suspense series.

John Carter (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)

John Carter Excceded My Expectations!
I went in to "John Carter" filled with trepidation. I often avoid these big, splashy CGI spectacles that never live up to their promises and I was sure that this film was going to be nothing more than lots of cinematic eye candy and short on substance. Added to that there was a lot of lackluster critical reviews. Well, all I can say is that this was a grand entertainment and I am so glad I caught it on the big screen!

I've heard some critics say the plot was a mess and overly convoluted. Really? My suggestion to them is "don't text while watching a movie, you might miss something". I found the plot fairly well done and actually made sense (if only the last Star Trek film had that going for it) and was interesting to boot.

I also read that the look of Barsoom (Mars to you and me) was dull and uninteresting. Hmmm, never been an admirerer of the stark and raw beauty of the American southwest I guess. Personally I found Barsoom to be beautiful, alien, exotic...

John Carter is an Epic Win Despite Horrible Marketing and Insane Critics
John Carter captures the spirit of the original ERB books very well. I'm not going to give a thorough review of the movie because so many other reviewers have already done that. I will, however, say that everyone involved in the production of this movie should be commended. The film takes Burroughs' "A Princess of Mars" and combines elements of the second book "Gods of Mars" (adding a few tweaks along the way) to create what can be called a mini-masterpiece. The story is well-written, the characters are fleshed out, the FX enhance the story not overshadow it, and the acting is excellent. The stunning Lynn Collins steals the show with her performance as Princess Dejah Thoris, Taylor Kitsch is admirable as Carter, and Willem Dafoe is perfect as the Thark leader Tars Tarkas. Andrew Stanton did a great job directing, the score is memorable, and the visuals are breathtaking.

If you haven't read the original books (which are absolute classics), you'll enjoy this movie...

Incredible Story
Former Confederate Civil War soldier, Captain John Carter has nothing left to fight for when he finds himself transported to a desert planet. Suddenly among a warrior tribe of four-armed aliens and a beautiful princess, Carter ends up in the middle of another war. But when faced with the chance of returning home to Earth, Carter may have found a cause worth fighting for in Princess Dejah and the people of Barsoom.

Taylor Kitsch stars as John Carter, the bitter and destitute man who cares for nothing but his found cave of gold. Kitsch has a young face and stoic countenance, perfect for the role of the ageless John Carter. He's a believable fighter and a great straight man to plenty of humor. Princess Dejah is played by Lynn Collins, who has terrific chemistry with John Carter, and is just as strong and smart as her male counterparts (if not more). Mark Strong and Dominic West are fantastic villains, especially West as a surprisingly charming and attractive (though na

Mirror Mirror (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Snow White and Seven Vertically Challenged Guerillas or the Triumph of True Love over Puppy Love...)))
Although not exactly a masterpiece, this film is a very pleasant, very amusing and very nice moment of cinema. It doesn't pretend to have other ambitions than to give us a merry good laugh - but in this mission it succeeds very nicely.

This is a very unorthodox retelling of the Snow White fairy tale, but the principal characters are all there.

The Evil Queen (Julia Roberts) is probably the main attraction in this show. She was "modernized" (she is in fact a gold digger exhausting financial resources of successive husbands) and "upgraded" (she can do REALLY BAD magic - it is not just disguise and poison). Her Magic Mirror is also much more powerful than earlier versions. Julia Roberts clearly had lots of fun playing this character and she is simply excellent! She is also very atractive in this film - frankly, I think even more attractive than Snow White... And the scene in which she takes care her of her body, face, skin, lips, hair etc. to better ensnare the...

A New Wrinkle on an Old Story
"Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away...." How many times will they remake "Snow White" and when will we tire of seeing it? At least this time it's billed as "The untold adventures..." and is from the queen's point of view.

In this version, our evil queen is played by a wry, dry Julia Roberts, who is clearly having the time of her life, so let's get ready for a new wrinkle on an old story. Her acerbic digressions are a hoot as this is a far more adult (and more comic) take.

This cast promises more than a light touch of comedy:
* Julia Roberts ("Larry Crowne") is a four-times-married widow who instantly sees potential in the handsome prince who comes adventuring into her poverty-stricken realm. In order to throw a party for him, she raises taxes.
* Lily Collins ("Priest") is our orphaned Snow White, slated for an early death in the forest as soon as the queen realizes the threat from her burgeoning beauty. Collins has the eyebrows of a young...

Moderately entertaining.
A re-telling of the classic Disney tale of Snow White receives a modern-day make over. The cast of characters is still largely the same, but this time Snow White is a little more independent and able to fend for herself against the evil god-mother. A valiant attempt at updating this tale works well at times, not so well at others. The film certainly looks terrific, with costumes and colorful sets that really bring a magical feel to the film. The humor in it sometimes falls flat as the attempt to be hip does not always work. The best movie's best asset is Lily Collins, who is absolutely delightful as Snow White. I would say that this is a movie that the kids will certainly enjoy and the adults who take them will find it entertaining enough.

Love in a Cold Climate

At Last, At Last!
In the winter of 1982 I was spellbound by the 8 part mini-series Love in a Cold Climate shown on Masterpiece Theater. I looked forward to seeing it again, but to my dismay it was never repeated and I had to rely only on my memories except for short clips on Youtube. Now at last it's born again as a DVD set, and I can barely wait to once again feast my eyes on it.

The mini-series combines Nancy Mitford's two companion novels The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, both of which were published in the late 1940s and are the most autobiographical of all of her novels. The main and most compelling portions deal with the romantic vissisitudes of young Linda Radlett, daughter of the eccentric Lord Alconleigh and his vague but loving wife (ably played by Judi Dench). Linda longs for love, finding it first in a young but extremely dull banker, next in a dedicated Communist, and finally in an aristocratic French duke. Her cousin and best friend Fanny, the narrator of the...

THIS 405 min DVD wins over the earlier 150 min by 255 min
Compare 2 adaptations of Love in a Cold Climate? Both excellent, both should be viewed. Each combines the same two Nancy Mitford novels. Equally stellar casts. Both mime the novels: accurate in period detail, well written, provide popping emotion from humor to tragic, even using some book dialogue. Why opt for this new release? MORE! 255 minutes longer of delightful drama and interaction of 1930 romances.

Fanny is the key character telling the story. With a more common face, Isabelle Amyes is great in this long series, but I also love Rosamund Pike's arresting smile (short version.) Both are great stars doing a fantastic Fanny. In this l-o-n-g series Judi Dench (as Aunt Sadie) fans will swear by her perfection, rightly so. Keeping up with the Dench excellence is Davey Warbeck (by Michael Williams), and Uncle Matt (by Michael Aldridge). Cast comparisons could take forever.

SUBTITLES available for all 8 episodes:

Early Dench still eclipses fellow actors.
This series is a must for all Judi Dench fans. This woman out-acts nearly everyone else oncsreen.
An unusual 'almost biography' from one those infamous Mitford sisters. The early part with the girls as children is a little wooden but when they grow up the story really takes off so stick with it.
It's a rather campy tale of the lives of the wealthy and titled in 1920's-30's England with Judy Dench as mum.

VeggieTales: It's a Meaningful Life

Doing good, veggie tales!
I feel like there has been a shift in the focus of veggie tale productions. Before it seemed to be a lot more bible-centered, which is something I miss now when I watch their new ones to be honest. I think it's cool that they make spin-offs of old movies but I miss the creativity and just the simple bible stories they once had. That and it seems like veggie tales has become very larry-focused. I like larry but I also love the other characters as well! Despite that, I do see all the effort they put in this DVD. It's really deep, even for a children's dvd and in many ways, relateable for all ages. The silly song with Junior was really funny and overall the dvd was really good with a great message. Their productions seem to be getting better and better, but I'm still missing and yearning for some of the old simple bible messages and having all the characters have a chance at the spotlight.

Still doing great
Veggie Tales was lacking for a while; most of this was due to internal struggles (read Phil Vischer's book, Me Myself & Bob, to find out what) With Sweetpea Beauty, they really showed they were back! The quality still is high with It's a meaningful Life.

This is a "remake" of It's a Wonderful Life; the old b&w Christmas version with (I believe) Donna Reed & Jimmy Stuart.....with a little Polar Express thrown in for good animation. (or maybe it was just me that saw that train as a reference)

I would highly recommmend this one; a really great lesson.

I love love love this movie!
This is a great cartoon. I love veggie tales, but this is a new favorite.
Struggling with why you are where you are, struggling with why your dreams haven't come true? This cartoon is about a character, Stewart, who didn't see his biggest dream of being a football hero come true, and discovers on a mysterious train ride the reasons God had for him not fulfilling that dream. Perhaps there are lives who wouldn't be touched if your dreams came true, but perhaps your dreams will be fulfilled in a different manner than you could imagine, who knows, but God. This is a great cartoon for everyone, young and old, but especially those who are struggling to find a meaningful life for Christ.

NFL New York Giants: Road to Xlvi

Must have for Ginats Fans
"New York Giants: Road to XLVI" is another 'must have' for all Giants Fans. It contains the 3 Giants' Playoff Game wins, and of course Super Bowl XLVI. The games are the complete network broadcasts. If you have an HDTV and Blu-ray player, make sure you get the Blu-ray version. The transfer is superb, and it looks better than my HD DVR recordings I saved from the games. I agree with everyone that believes "Road to XLVI" could have been better if had the Dallas and/or Jet games included. With that being said though, I still consider "Road to XLVI" a 5 star Blu-ray collection, and a 'must have' for all Giants' fans.

What is everyone talking about?
I don't know what version some of you bought, but my Blu-ray copy has a bonus disc with the Cowboys game! I highly doubt that they would release two different versions (One with the Cowboys game, one without it), so it seems to me that many of you are complaining about a product that you don't even have! This release is just like the road to Super Bowl 42, it has the last game of the season, and the 4 playoff games. What more could you ask for?, and this time around it's in HD!

JUST LIKE FOUR YEARS AGO!!!!!
Let me first of all say I'm sick and tried of people criticzing the way the NFL produce their DVD I was happy the way this DVD Came out Okay they didn't include The Jets Game and Cowboys Game for the East Diivision But who cares though out the Playoffs The Giants Play like true Champions Eli Manning is now an Elite Quarterback!!!!!

Unhook the Stars

Superb actors in a fine film
Gena Rowlands and Mareisa Tomei lead a cast of fine actors in this story of a middle-aged widow who is at a turning point in her life. For movie lovers like me who do not think Meryl Streep is the greatest actress in the world, you will find Rowlands a joy to watch in another of her pitch perfect characterizations.

A movie worth watching!
Great movie especially for older mom's and dad's who have other things to do with the rest of their lives besides baby sit. We did that already.

Frontline: Murdoch's Scandal

Geared to introduce the News Corp. phone hacking story so far to American audiences
This Frontline production from Lowell Bergman is a compelling look inside of the phone hacking scandal now engulfing and inexorably eating away at News Corporation. It's geared to introduce "the story so far" to American audiences. As such, it introduces us to seminal characters beyond Rupert and James Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks:

- Manchester solicitor advocate, Mark Lewis, whose doggedness and keen ear and eye has advanced the story as much as anyone
- MP Chris Bryant and his early role in uncovering police payola (and subsequent outing by Brooks)
- The Guardian's key role - long the sole voice in the wilderness, their vindication is now complete
- The New York Times' role in legitimizing the investigation

The story exploded once the revelations expanded past celebrities, royalty and politicians to teenage murder victim Milly Dowler. After the Dowler penny dropped, every [non-News International] media channel picked up the scent in earnest...

Kurenai: Complete Collection

Loved it
Hi there,

I've not yet seen this DVD release, so I can't comment on the quality of the DVD's. But I have seen the show itself and I loved it. As a fan of the movie 'Leon: The Professional', this show hit many of the right notes for me, as its about a man taking care of a young girl. I can't quite give it five stars as it has a few unforgivably frustrating moments in it, but they aren't enough to ruin the show for me. However, some will disagree with that.

Anyway, I hope this does well for Section 23 as I very much appreciate them bringing this over. I never thought it would get licensed. Check it out!

Kurenai
Everything was going so well until the end.... i did not like the ending it seemed like he would continue to watch over her but she went back to her old life but with strong conviction showing she wanted change done immediately so she had more freedom to do as she liked! I think he gave her big time confidence to speak her mind! Pam

Breaking Bad: The Complete Fourth Season [Blu-ray]

The parallels of good and evil.
The best television dramas of all time don't TELL you what is good or bad, or WHO is good or bad - they let people be people, and then you form your own opinions of the characters. From the Sopranos, to the Wire, to the Shield, and now Breaking Bad. And honestly, I think this may surpass them all, even the Sopranos.

Meet Walter White. Well, if you're already on Season 4, I assume you know his story. From dorky chemistry teacher/car wash worker to million-dollar methamphetamine cook, the transformation is unbelievable, yet believable at the same time. You know his story, how he got here, and it all seems to fit. The writers have made it clear for a long time that Breaking Bad was similar to Scarface - that Walt is comparable to the transformation of Mr. Chips to Scarface, and this season shows that perfectly.

Walt has and still believes coming into season 4 that he is doing this all for his family. But is he? How far will he go? And is this all for money,...

"She's got an ass like an onion...makes me want to cry." - Hank Shrader
This television series has forever skewed my view of TV these days. Suddenly, my other favorite shows don't seem as engaging. The plots seem tired and the dialogue cliched. This is what happens when you've watched Breaking Bad. I recently did a two week marathon of the first three seasons and my only regret afterwards was that I had to endure the long agonizing wait of a new episode each week.

Season 4 lives up to the standards of excellence set by the previous seasons. What I love is how the writers have no fear of painting themselves in a corner. You wonder if they even know how to get their characters out of jam or are they guessing like the rest of us? There are many "Holy crap!" moments this season and it's a joy to see how Walter and Jesse manage to keep their heads above water as the mayhem slowly pulls them under.

Hold on... Why are you even reading this? Go watch the show for crying out loud.

5 stars plus 5 more
I rarely purchase tv series on DVD.......this is the best written, most creative, dark, fantastically human, amazingly addictive television show I've seen since well forever.....My boyfriend rented season 1 for me to watch and we watched it together I was hooked 15 minutes into the first episode. We then went and rented season 2 finished both in one weekend each. Then Season 3 getting ready to come out in video store and I couldn't stand it so I went to the local big box retailer and purchased season three......if one and two don't blow your mind season three well...... lets just say I didn't think the writing or the acting could maintain or for that matter get any better and damn I was wrong........fantastic. I am so addicted I went ahead and purchased from Amazon Season 1 & 2. I am into the 4th season on TV and can't wait wait wait for Season 4 on DVD. Best ever tv show! A must see for all . Even if you are not a tv series person.....you won't be able to stop......I bet someone will...

Burn Notice: Season Five

A darker direction for Westen and Co., but it works surprisingly well.
This latest season of BURN NOTICE, one of the best TV shows on the air right now, was decidedly different in tone if not in execution as Michael Westen, Fiona Glennanne, Sam Axe and Jesse Porter face a much more insidious threat than they have before on this show, and this show has seen plenty of threats.

We begin with Michael being embraced once again by the CIA, under the purview of his old handler Raines (the always great, but sadly under-used Dylan Baker) and while he's in a probationary period, he's putting all of his old skills to work with his new partner Max (Grant Snow) and has a new case officer, the sharp and attractive Agent Pearce (Lauren Stamile). He's living in something resembling bliss also, with Fiona moved into his loft, desperately trying to make the place more hospitable. Sam is back down to his "fighting weight", as we saw in the tie-in TV movie THE FALL OF SAM AXE, and Jesse has a flashy job with an independent, high-profile security contractor...

No spoilers attached
I am a huge fan of this show, but I don't completly agree with the other reviewers about how great the last season was. It was still very good, just not like it has been in the past. The only real standout in this season was Gabrielle Anwar's Fiona. You were able to see new depth to her character that you hadn't before. In past seasons she was always willing to do whatever it took to help their clients, but the show never explored her as a person. This season we were better able to see what she was willing to sacrifice for the greater good of those whe loved, even if it was her freedom. This was a big turnaround for someone who I always thought was a little selfish and narrow minded. Like I said she was always willing to do whatever it takes, but usually in her own terms. She relentlessly pursued her relationship with Michael, but she would always threaten to walk away if he did something she didn't like. While the changes in Fiona were good, I did not always like the changes...

Burn Notice reinvigorated
I had been getting a bit tired of Burn Notice. It was becoming too obviously formulaic and the antagonists were getting sillier and sillier. Each season the people Michael's team was fighting against became ever more powerful - they could circumscribe world governments and they became less and less believable as time went on. What new super power of evil would the team be fighting against next, I asked myself after Season Four - the Devil? I stopped buying the DVDs after Season Two - But. I can't wait for Season Five to become available. The creation of Anson as the antagonist is inspired. He really could qualify as the Devil; he is so believable that it is chilling. He has tied the previous four season together as we get glimpses into Michael's past. The use of a highly intelligent, skilled psychologist as Michael's foe, bringing the evil back to one man, makes the series believable again.

If you think of Anson as Archangel Lucifer and Michael as Archangel Michael...

Hatfields & Mccoys: Bad Blood

2 and 1/2 Stars: BAD BLOOD Draws Little Blood Badly
For all that I've heard about the rousing feud that took place between the Hatfields and the McCoy families, HATFIELDS & MCCOYS: BAD BLOOD drew very little blood. There only are a few killings here - though I have absolutely no idea how much if any of this is based on historical events (though I suspect there must be some correlation) - and what there is I'd hardly call `bloody.' Still, there's a respectable undercurrent of shared loathsome running through the entire piece - I wish it had been given greater clarification - so, on that front, I'd give it a decent two and one-half stars as a TV-grade oater.

The story? Well, there are these two familes - one called Hatfield, and one called McCoy - and they basically don't play nicely with one another. The script doesn't give any great exploration as to why - suffice it to say that there are hints pointing to being so closely tied to a dividing line between the North and the South in the Civil War - but it's given way too...

...just mediochre.
Lately Christian Slater has been making 'payday films' much like Val Kilmer.
2 stars is generous.
This film left me dangling after having seen the Costner film. In fact I felt I had been hanged and scalpted. If you are curious...rent. You have been warned.

The Kevin Costner Hatfields and McCoys is far superior.

Dear sweet lord...
It probably wasn't fair that I watched this on the heels of the History Channel's version, but I did, thus my review of this movie might be *slightly* biased.

First of all...it is so historically inaccurate that it's not funny. I can't give too much away here without spoiling it for everybody else, so I won't go too much into the plot. However, very little was accurate in this tale, from the murder of Asa Harmon McCoy to the killing of Ellison Hatfield to the Hatfields' attack on the McCoy family to simply who survived the feud and what worked out in the end. Secondly, the acting ranged from bad to lukewarm. Maybe it was because of the dreadful dialogue, I don't know. But the kid who played Johnse's little brother was memorably terrible, as were the men playing the McCoy brothers. Kassandra Clementi didn't fare any better as Roseanna (but, again, that might be a bias, as I really loved Lindsay Pulsipher as Roseanna in the HC version). Sean Flynn (Errol Flynn's grandson, in...

LOL

I can't believe this actually got made...
There are lots and lots of people standing in between a movie being conceptualized, green-lit, written, shot, edited, marketed and distributed. Not one of those people said 'hey, we should maybe stop throwing good money after bad and desist with making this horrible atrocious affront to storytelling because we think Miley Cyrus will get the young ladies to the theatre'. And that's the real tragedy here- that none of those professionals did anything to end this awfulness.

I made it 7 minutes and 53 seconds into the film before I had to stop it. What utter trash.

Miley is Miley, the same as she is in everything, an energetic bundle of over-rehearsed, well-meaning Disney sassafrass that never quite rings true. She demonstrates no depth of character or feeling, and she crashes through her scene work with all the care and specificity of a drunk parrot. Demi Moore is collecting a paycheck, and you can see that she gives exactly zero f@#%s about what she's doing. All...

Not recommended for teens or anyone else
I was looking for a fun movie to watch while my husband was gone. I thought this was a good choice because of the actors and because I knew husband would never watch it with me. But don't waste your time on this one. I cringe to think about teenagers watching this movie and thinking that the behavior is acceptable.
It's one of those movies where they try to make 'right look wrong and wrong look right'. Everything about it was wrong--mom was a mess, dad was a mess, daughter tried really hard to have morals-but then ended up a mess too. I was disgusted by the sexual references in this movie. There are better ways to teach kids about life. So disappointed in Miley Cyrus for taking this role.

Boring
I fell asleep twice before I finished the movie. It wasn't that great! This is a movie for teenagers. The story itself was no polar and there was a lot of temper tantrums. I would not recommend this movie too anyone.

Veggie Tales: Pistachio

I Laughed Until I Stopped
One of the best Veggie Tales ever! The animation was top-notch, the humor was better then usual (I laughed out-loud many times) and the lesson was excellent for children. The importants of listening to wise parents and in this case a father in a child's life. The retelling of Pinocchio was a great storyline for the Big Idea group and they didn't disappoint with a very clever rendition. I liked how they skirted around the whole fairy thing with Madame Blueberry. Very cute. Kahlil (the caterpillar named Cricket) steals the show with his humor and loyalty. The Silly Songs With Larry was a good one with the Office Supply song done as a obscure Broadway musical. Qwerty gets an upgrade but Bob still rolls his eyes.

My four year old loved the entire DVD. I highly recommend it too.

1 Star = Pathetic
2 Stars = Fair
3 Stars = Good
4 Stars = Excellent
5 Stars = Life changing

Not their best work
While I wouldn't be as harsh as some reviewers, this is certainly not the best effort they've made. The story is fine and the message is fine, it's just not that creative or done with the excellence you might expect. I enjoyed this more than my wife (she would probably give it only 2 stars).

Another Classic Veggie Tale DVD to add to the Family Collection
This DVD brilliantly merges the classic Pinnochio story with the bible parable of the lost sheep. Along with the lesson on honesty, it helps children realize that parents ask them to do things out of love. The Silly Songs and Italian brothers will have your kids laughing and singing along. Loved it and so did the kids!

Santa Claus Is Coming to Town (Spanish Edition)

The best of the Christmas movies
First, let's clear up one fact, this is NOT Claymation. It is STOP MOTION animation. Claymation has figures made of clay that are filmed one frame at a time. Stop motion has 3 dimentional puppets that are animated one frame at a time like the Ray Harryhousen figures in King Kong, Jason and the Argonaughts etc. There is a vast differance in the techniques.

This fact aside, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" is the very best of the wonderful Rankin/Bass specials. The designer for the series of holiday specials, Paul Coker, has done an exceptional job with these delightful wooden and plastic creations. We see Kris Kringle develope from a foundling baby to the Santa figure so well known today. Each stage of his development is wonderful. But then, each of the characters is designed and executed perfectly. Watch the delightful changes of the Winter Worlock from mean and evil to mellow and fun.

All the animation is smooth and precise giving the excellent illusion that these...

A CLASSIC!
"Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" (Rankin/Bass Productions, 1970) is a true Christmas classic. A quintessential "animagic" or "clay-mation" production, it features the talents of Fred Astaire (who narrates the story as postman Special Delivery Kluger), Mickey Rooney (Kris Kringle), Keenan Wynn (Winter Warlock), and Paul Frees (Burgermeister Meisterburger). Frees is absolutely brilliant as the voice of the Burgermeister of the village of Sombertown, which presumably is in Scandinavia. In brief, the film explains the origins of various aspects of the legend of Santa Claus through an original story. People of all ages will enjoy "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town." Children will love the animation and the story. The rest of us appreciate that as well as the hilarious moments when Kris Kringle expresses surprise (watch his eyes swell to giant coal-black circles!). For anyone who grew up in the 1970s or 1980s, this is a gem of the pop...

Santa Claus comes to Blu-ray
Santa Claus is Comin' to Town came to ABC first in 1970, when Rankin/Bass was firing on all cylinders. The visual difference between this production and that of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is considerable, especially with regard to the immense, detailed sets and more intricate characters, designed by Paul Coker, Jr. Yes, there is the same animation "on two's and three's" as well as a few modest effects, but everything clicks within the brisk 51 minutes, none of which seem padded.

When I asked him to name a favorite special (in The Cartoon Music Book) Musical director/composer Maury Laws called this his favorite, because he thought every element was perfect, from the cast to the script to the overall feel. Fred Astaire proved added another dimension to his legendary career as one of the best narrators in any special. Mickey Rooney's bravado was ideal for the young Kris Kringle. Keenan Wynn's Winter Warlock was memorable (especially when he gets the choo-choo). And our...

BEST OF TENNESSEE TUXEDO

See see see! Sort of...
I'm in my mid 40's and I watched Tennessee Tuxedo in its original form on a thirteen inch black and white Zenith TV back in the mid 1960's. I am thrilled just to see Tennessee and his friends in color (I didn't know they were in color) and in a high quality reproduction on a modern TV.

That said, there's something very sterile about this approach to packaging these old cartoons. It's really not like watching those great old shows I remember over again because what you have here is fifteen or so Tennessee segments (many more episodes were produced) cut out of their original context and presented pure, alone, and rather clinically at that. (And with a weird and totally out-of-context promo for a Casper the Ghost show that you have to view every time you put in the DVD.)

There's a certain fun factor that's been removed. It's like an exhibit in a futuristic museum of 1960's kids TV. You can see, but you can't really experience the subject matter.

I...

Still fun, but I wish they had kept the original Underdog format...
I am going to be 35 years old this sunday which means I was watching Tennessee and Chumley on the Underdog show back in the '70s. I remember I actually enjoyed the Tennessee Tuxedo shorts more than the Underdog and Go-Go Gophers etc most of the time. The 'education' that is part of each plot was fascinating to me as I child. I loved to read and learn and I loved cartoons!

Very great times and very good memories.
I think most other people my age, if they are interested at all, would like to see/relive these shorts in their original, Underdog cliff-hanger style - but I will take what I can get.

Technical:
Overall, I would say the picture and sound quality are quite good, but I did note a couple of details:
1.) There is an UNSKIPPABLE Casper commercial on the DVD
2.) When using 'Play All', there are no credits or breaks to Underdog etc. so the shorts sort of run together if you aren't paying close attention.
3.) The package says, '15 of the...

I'm Glad It's Out, But It Could Have Been Better
"Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales" arguably was one of the best series to come out of Total Television (now owned by Classic Media who also owns the rights to Casper, hence the promo), next to "The Underdog Show". Unfortunately, Classic's treatment of the TTV material pales in comparison to their treatment of the Jay Ward material (which they also now own). They should offer complete seasons instead of "best of's" as there were 70 "Tennessee Tuxedo" episodes in total. Also, the theme song has been changed to a 'demo' version instead of the actual one sung by Don Adams and Bradley Bolke (Tennessee and Chumley, respectively). The prints are good, and the cartoons are still entertaining, despite my misgivings on the packaging.

FYI, Total Television produced the following series (in no particular order) from 1959-1969:

King Leonardo

The Hunter

Tooter the Turtle

Tennessee Tuxedo

Klondike Kat

Commander McBragg...

ATM

A pretty tense but also very repetitive thriller that is worth watching. If you liked "Phonebooth" check this one out. I say B
"Why is he doing this?!!" After finally getting up the nerve to talk to the girl he likes David (Geraghty) is excited to be driving Emily (Eve) home. When his friend Corey (Peck) crashes his date and asks to stop at the ATM machine he is counting down the minutes till he can get Emily alone. After getting out the cash they turn around and notice a stranger starting at them. Their night takes a deadly turn. To start with this is not a bad movie at all. I like the movies like this where it takes an everyday activity and introduces terror into it. The big problem with this is that after a half hour it seemed to run out of ideas and kept repeating itself over and over. The one thing that really saved this and made it enjoyable was the end. This is not a typical "Hollywood" ending and that helped the movie a lot. If you liked "Devil" or "Phonebooth" then you will also like this one. This is worth a watch. Overall, a tense but also repetitive thriller that is worth watching. Ending is great...

A Modest, But Entertaining, Thriller: Need Cash In The Middle Of the Night? Park Close!
Although I am certain that some people will not like "ATM," I actually found it to be a relatively enjoyable little thriller. As a B-movie guilty pleasure, this slight film benefits from having modest ambitions. Thus, with its limited scope, I think it works satisfactorily as a pleasing and entertaining diversion. You want a big complicated plot? You need interesting back story? You want character motivation? Don't bother with any of that! "ATM" plays out as a simple, but extravagant, nightmare. Three young professionals visit an ATM booth in the middle of the night only to have that seemingly mundane decision irrevocably change their lives. A menacing figure watches them from afar. And as they contemplate what to do, his murderous intentions become quite clear. Who is he? Why has he targeted this trio? Again, the plot that holds "ATM" together is sketchy at best. You'll get the most enjoyment by not thinking about it, not analyzing the logic, just experiencing it. Normally, I might...

Very poorly written
WARNING: SPOILERS.

I saw the trailer, and thought, "wow, how could they make a movie about being in an ATM scary, since it looks so easy for them to escape." I thought that the movie must be some well scripted mind game in which the bad guy plays with his victims to terrorize them and force them to choose the path he's laid out for them - so they stay in the ATM because they have no choice.

Uh, no. It's basically a movie about 3 incredibly stupid people who act just like stupid people would. And the killer has no plan. He just looks for ATM's that don't have good security camera coverage and then waits at night for someone to come by. Here is an example of something you think is about to reveal the mind game, and ramp up tension, but only serves to make you disconnect from the film given how unlike the you and the characters are (i.e., they are stupid):

The bad guy decides to walk around to the back of the ATM. You think he's about to unleash...

Veggie Tales: Madame Blueberry/Esther the Girl Who Would Be Queen

Veggietales DVD - Madame Blueberry & Esther
Two of our favorites on one DVD. What a find! You'll love watching Madame Blueberry storming the new "Stuff Mart" and even cringe a little as she piles cart after cart with "stuff" she doesn't need. And "Esther", besides being witty and funny, is also aesthetically pleasing. I got to know Bob & Larry through my grandson as we watched Veggietale marathons together. There is so much subtle humor in these witty animated productions. I think I laugh more than he does. I encourage anyone who hasn't discovered these winsome, thoughtful, timeless productions to sit down and enjoy them with their kids & grandkids. The Christian values are intrinsic & universal - never preachy - thoughtful but never heavy.

The messages will stay with you for years!
We watched these when they first came out. We still call big box stores 'stuff mart' and it helps us keep perspective as we shop! These videos have great messages for kids and for parents.

Classic Veggie
Stuff Mart is a wonderland full of everything anyone could ever want... or is it? Madame Blueberry learns that a thankful heart cannot be bought at Stuff Mart. Being thankful to God for all you have and not coveting that which you don't is a very important lesson for children to learn in these days. Veggie tales does it in a fun musical fashion that even my husband and I love. You will find yourself singing A thankful heart is a happy heart all day though!

Wrath of the Titans

MORE TO LIFE THAN GODS AND TITANS
All hell breaks loose (literally) in this non-mythological based sequel to "Clash of the Titans." This story bridges the time of the gods and legends to the time of men. The gods have been losing their power because people have stopped praying to them. Hades, the god of the underworld (Ralph Fiennes) and Ares, god of war (Édgar Ramírez) join forces to release Kronos from Tartus and destroy the gods. Zeus (Liam Neeson) is taken captive and held prisoner as his power is slowly drained from him.

Perseus, son of Zeus (Sam Worthington) teams up with Queen Andromeda(Rosamund Pike), Hephaestus (Bill Nighy) and Agenor (Toby Kebbell) to enter the ever shifting labyrinth of Tartus and free Zeus. Apparently ordering everyone to pray to Zeus to give him power is no longer an option. Alexa Davalos played the original Andromeda...just pretend you are watching "Bewitched."

The movie gives you a brief intro, but there is no real character build-up with an...

Though considerably flawed Wrath of the Titans is surprisingly entertaining.
It'd be difficult to approach Wrath of the Titans with a completely open mind. The film it follows, Clash of the Titans, was dull and almost single-handedly began the downfall of 3D in the US. Those low expectations though may actually be an advantage for Wrath. Though flawed it's an entertaining film with some spectacular special effects. Even more surprising - the 3D is worthwhile and enhances the experience.

The story follows Perseus (Sam Worthington) who must travel into the underworld to rescue his father Zeus (Liam Neeson). Zeus' other son Ares (Edgar Ramirez) has turned on him and handed him over to Hades (Ralph Fiennes). The plan is to sap Zeus' powers and transfer them to the leader of the imprisoned Titans - Kronos - (father to Zeus, Hades, and Poseiden) who would then unleash hell on the world.

Where the negativity towards Clash really makes an impact is in the early minutes of Wrath. There is no real emotional attachment to the characters - no real...

Release the Sequel !!!
Clash of the Titans was an okay remake that could have been great, but the trailers for Wrath of the Titans looked to be a huge improvement and in some cases it was.

From the Kraken to Kronos. Hades decides to join side Kronos to destroy the world and thus securing his immortality, but first he needs all the power Zeus contains to restore his daddy to his past glory. Perseus catches word of this and is on a mission to save his father, Zeus, and fights all kinds of creatures along the way.

The CGI is excellent this time around and there are far fewer corny moments. Even the acting seemed less forced, though still pretty average. Seeing this in IMAX 3-D was worth the extra money. It was fully shot in this format so the images were crystal clear and it made you feel you were actually in the movie, along with the usual random objects being shot towards your face.

Wrath of the Titans is pure mindless action with little need for dialogue or a well thought...

The Villain Still Pursued Her

This is something just a little different.
The villians are evil doers that you will hiss at, the goodies you will root for and along the way you will enjoy this over the top comedy. Buster Keaton plays the role to William, he is one of the heroes of the storyline. This is great fun to watch as the characters whisper to the camera and you are encouraged to hiss and clap along. If you like panto you are going to really enjoy this movie. It is certainly not your average film.

"Ah.... I see you like butter!"
THE VILLAIN STILL PURSUED HER is one of the little gems hidden in MCE's COMEDY KINGS 50 Movie Pack. This one's so good I actually just watched it two nights in a row-- something I *never* do.

The film's style and era are reminiscent of the WARNER BROS. cartoon "The Dover Boys at Pimento University or The Rivals of Roquefort Hall" (1942)-- a one-of-a-kind Chuck Jones classic that introduced the world to the Dover Boys (Tom, Dick and Larry), their sweetheart (Dora dear) and the evil villain (Dan Backslide).

The plot of "The Villain..." is basic: pure-hearted girl marries a na

Waves of Lust

70's Eurosleaze That Aims To Please A Select Audience...
[WAVES OF LUST - 1975 - Widescreen 1.85:1 - In English or Italian w/ English subtitles - directed by Ruggero Deodato - 88 min.] Although he had a highly respectable career as a television and commercial director, Ruggero Deodato is best remembered for his notorious exploitation classics, 'Jungle Holocaust' (1977), 'Cannibal Holocaust' (1980) and 'The House on the Edge of the Park' (1980). He even directed a notable crime drama 'Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man' (1976), but this entry from the previous year is unlike his known body of work, for better or worse. BTW, Lamberto Bava was only one of four co-writers here, and had nothing to do with its direction.

Two couples bump shoulders at a seaside resort, one wealthy, one not, and get entangled in each others crosshairs with typically wretched results. Highly despicable and wealthy financier Giorgio (John Steiner) and his virtual slave of a lover and part-time subject of abuse, Silvia (Elizabeth Turner), hook up with Irem (Al...

Waves of Lust
Ruggero Deodato is another one of the prolific Italian directors from the sixties and seventies, who made a career in horror, romantic, and thriller films. In his case, he was also successful in advertising. He helmed the cult classic "Cannibal Holocaust," which has been referred to as "one of the most infamous splatter films of all time." "Waves of Lust" is an exquisite erotic thriller, one of his masterpieces that are finally getting a well-deserved new opportunity to be enjoyed at its highest quality..

Barbara (Silvia Dionisio, Deodato's real-life wife) and Irem (Al Cliver) are an easy going couple that wanders around in the beautiful coastal town of Cefalu. While walking around the beach, they notice Giorgio (John Steiner) mistreating Silvia (Elizabeth Turner), his girlfriend. Barbara and Irem don't appreciate what's going on, and purposely make friends with Giorgio and Silvia. Giorgio is a spoiled rich-boy who owns a yacht, which happens to be anchored off coast. He...

Rub-A-Dub-Dub Four Swingers In A Tub
Deceit, lies , and full frontal nudity (female, of course) abound in Director Ruggero Deodato's 'WAVES OF LUST'
aka 'ONDATA DI PIACERE'- 1975, a slick, enjoyable Euro thriller camouflaged by its soft core porn milieu. There were many of these types of films being made at that time in Europe. Directors Jess Franco and Aristide Massaccesi aka Joe d'Amato lensed them throughout the late seventies/early eighties and yet, Deodato's film comes off so much better as the sleaze factor is forced into the background and allowing the story to unfold at its own pacing. The film is constantly compared to Director Roman Polanski's second feature 'KNIFE IN THE WATER' -1962 but only slightly hints at it. The screenplay and ideas by Lamberto Bava, Gianlorenzo Battaglia, Franco Bottari and Fabio Pittoro introduce many elements such as blackmail, domination, an early suicide (or is it murder ) which is never explained and envelops the viewer into a spiders web spinning into horrible possibilities...

Always Goodbye

Rare Stanwyck Film Finally on DVD
The DVD is one of those special order made by demand DVDs but at least it isn't a bootleg. FOr years, that's all that was available for this rare Stanwyck film made in 1938. The transfer quality is excellent!! The film would probably qualify as a 20th Century Fox programmer for the period. Stanwyck is stunningly photographed and wears a gorgeous wardrobe. She is her usual sincere self although the script isn't much of a challenge for her. She plays a woman whose fiancee is killed on his way to marry her. She is pregnant with his child and she has to give the child up for adoption with the help of Herbert Marshall in an insipid role. Years later, she becomes a successful fashion buyer and in Paris happens upon a little boy and develops a sweet attachment for him before finding out that he is her child.

I won't reveal anymore of the plot for the sake of spoiler activity. However, Stanwyck makes the film worthwhile and will disappoint none of her admirers. This film...

The Three Stooges: The Movie

Amazon's "Editorial Review" for this film made me do this
Amazon notified me via email that the new Farrelly Brothers' "The Three Stooges" was ready to be pre-ordered, so I linked over to do so--I hadn't had that much fun in a movie theater in a long time, and couldn't wait to re-visit the film at home along with the usual bounty of DVD extras the Farrellys usually provide (I hope). Imagine my shock when I read the supposedly authoritative "Amazon.com Editorial Review" posted at the film's page with the reviewer saying it was the Farrellys' "weakest effort to date" and "terminally unfunny." Look, I'm smart enough to know one review is just one person's opinion, and that comedy is very personal and a heckuva lot harder to pull off than drama (what's funny to one person is often simply irritating or annoying to another), but when the review is posted on a film's page as the authoritative last word, I have to put my two-cents in. Here's my short review: I either smiled, chuckled, or laughed out loud through the ENTIRE running time of this...

Good to See The Stooges Back on the Silver Screen
The Three Stooges started out as short subject films before a feature film, and it's good to see The Three Stooges back on a theater screen.

"The Three Stooges" doesn't have an involved plot or great subtle nuanced acting, it doesn't need it. The plot is pretty basic, the stooges are dropped off at an orphanage some time in the late 70's and as they grow up they wreak havoc on the nuns running the place and of course they're unadoptable. After they grow up Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos), Larry (Sean Hayes), and Curly (Will Sasso) still live at the orphanage and wirk as handymen. Yes, I spelled it wirk because they aren't the brightest bulbs in the socket although they may stick their fingers in the socket! When the orphanage runs into financial problems the boys are sent out into the world to raise $830,000 to save it (shades of the Blues Brothers). Out in the world they're instantly picked by Lydia (Sofia Vergara) and Mac (Craig Bierko) planning to murder Lydia's husband. They...

An Ode AND A Re-Imagining, With Both Working Splendidly
The Three Stooges, and their unique brand of slapstick humor, are an American comedy institution. The trouble is, you are either rolling on the floor laughing at them, or you think there material is the dumbest shtick in the world. If you fall into the latter category, stop reading this review now, as you will hate this movie with a flaming passion. If a Stooge appreciator or connoisseur, however, then this big-screen adaptation will have you short of breath once again!

For a basic plot summary, this movie follows the head-slapping, hair-pulling, eye-poking adventures of Larry (Sean Hayes), Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos), & Curly (Will Sasso) as they try to raise money to save an orphanage. In typical Stooge fashion, they bumble around for awhile and engage in the sort of hijinks one would expect from the trio. Along the way, they run into the cast of the Jersey Shore, Moe becomes a famous reality star, and the gang even have to mend a relationship issue stemming from...

Get the Gringo [Blu-ray]

The Mel Gibson vehicle we've all been waiting for!
With Mel Gibson doing himself no favors in the public media over the last six years, GET THE GRINGO is a much-needed reminder of why we loved him so much. While it was greatly refreshing to see Gibson on screen again in EDGE OF DARKNESS and THE BEAVER after an over- bearing eight-year absence, GET THE GRINGO does the best of capturing everything we truly loved about Gibson's performances: charm, wit, humor, edge. The script by Gibson, director Adrian Grunberg and producer Stacey Persky is an original and tight balance of humor, edge, and danger that can very easily be considered an unofficial sequel to the theatrical cut of Gibson's cult favorite, PAYBACK. While the character of GRINGO's Driver never reveals his actual name, he possesses a lot of the same qualities as PAYBACK's Porter, including a U.S. military tattoo, a chain-smoking habit, sticky fingers, an iron jaw, and a penchant for bloodshed. Grunberg's direction is also solid with an obvious love for Sam Peckinpah paraded...

Mel, it's wonderful to have you back!
Now THIS is how you make a proper action-thriller! "Get the Gringo" is one hell of a film; a stripped-down, gritty actioner reminiscent of the kind of dark, no-nonsense thrillers we saw back in the '70s and '80s. With so many glossy, CGI-laden blockbusters hitting screens these days, it's invigorating to see Mel Gibson - who grows more badass with each passing year - doing what he does best in his first true action-thriller since 1998's "Payback". Gibson may be controversial, but those who are open-minded enough to watch "Get the Gringo" will be rewarded with a visceral, lively motion picture featuring Gibson back at the top of his game.

An entertaining & violent movie that has the feel of an Oliver Stone movie. Not as good as last few Gibson movies. I say B+
"To the untrained eye it looks as if crime pays doesn't it, but bear in mind for guys with my particular set of karmic could-be's there was bound to be a bump or two down the road." After a car chase ends with Driver (Gibson) being caught be the Mexican police he is thrown in to their prison. Able to come and go as he pleases within the town he meets a nine year old boy who fills him in on the local people and problems. Wanting to get his money back from the corrupt cops Driver also decides help the young boy and his mother. I have to admit that I am a Mel Gibson fan. His last movie, "The Beaver" was outstanding and really was in unison with his personal meltdown. This movie, while not as good as that one still has some similarities to his life. This is about a man trapped and trying to not only help himself to straighten out, but also realizing that helping others is just a fulfilling. I may be reading too much into this and it may be just me though. The only down side is that after...

Being Flynn

A Radiant, Touching Memoir of Nick Flynn Brought to the Screen
Few films concerning father/son relationships have been able to produce the emotional impact of this masterfully written and directed and acted BEING FLYNN. Paul Weitz directs and adapted the 2004 memoir by Nick Flynn "Another Bulls__t Night in Suck City: A Memoir" and brought together a superlative cast that just may be Robert De Niro's finest hour. Nick Flynn deserves the credit for this articulate tale of his own life: he was born and grew up in Scituate, Massachusetts, south of Boston. His parents divorced when he was young and his mother committed suicide when he was 22. He drifted through several jobs before starting work at a homeless shelter in Boston, where at age twenty-seven, he met his estranged, homeless father for the first time. That is the core of the film.

The nature of the film works very well: we simultaneously meet Jonathan Flynn (Robert DeNiro), a man who believes he is `America's greatest writer along side Mark Twain and JD Salinger, who lives life...

"A POWERFULLY MOVING PORTRAIT OF FATHERS AND SONS!"
Based on a true story, this remarkable involving journey of relationships between fathers and sons captures your attention immediately. One father, Robert DeNiro, trys to reach out and bond with his son that he hasn't seen for a long time. His son is still feeling the loss of his mother, and trying to enter into a romantic relationship with his girlfriend. The last thing the boy wants to see is his father. This is an emotional drama as well as a comedy. Serious moments and funny moments. One young man is hurting emotionally as his father continues to struggle. The film portrays a second chance in life, inspiration, and a step forward in faith. Great acting performance, especially with De Niro, bittersweet story, and an emotional roller-coaster ride. I'd watch this again. Highly Entertaining And Highly Recommended!

Amazing Story of Human Resilience
I haven't read Nick Flynn's memoir yet, but it's at the top of my list now. While I'm sure this movie abbreviates Flynn's struggles, it amazes me how much one person can endure and still come out the other side with such a wonderful work of art. Anyone who has dealt with the trauma of a lost parent, a mentally ill parent and the suffocating voids they leave must see this movie.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Spanish language edition)

Rudy what have they done!
The DVD transfer is pretty good but the scene with Yukon discovering peppermint has been cut.

It seems pretty odd to sell a DVD as a restored classic only to leave out the main thing that was to be restored!

Why? Sony. Why?
For 2 years in a row Sony once again puts that stupid Destiny's Child crap on this Dvd. Why does Sony keep ruining Christmas classics like this and now Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town with a stupid Mariah Carey video. When is this dumb so-called trend going to stop. Leave the Christmas classics(Rudolf,Frosty,Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town)as is.Please, NO MORE EXTRA SONGS & VIDEOS...these are not good extras they are just pure crap!!!

Shame on you!
I have the original release in VHS and it is way-worn, so I desperately want to buy it in DVD format. I tell you this so that you can understand how hard it is for me NOT to buy this release. I will wait for one that is not polluted with new age garbage. As soon as this excellent Christmas Classic shows up in DVD format WITHOUT the modern commercial corruption, I will buy it, and maybe a few more to give to my loved ones as gifts.

Release without music videos, and I will purchase!

Angel Stories

Captivating!
My husband and I had purchased this DVD to see what it was all about.
We were blown away of all the true experiences these reputable people
have encountered with angels. It definately raised our faith level
after viewing this DVD. We love how Jon Nixon has put this film together.
We highly reccomend this DVD to everyone.

angel stories
The Dvd, was somewhat of a disappointment for me. I felt like a lot of what was being said was repeated over and over again. I was hoping for more 'actual' real life stories, not just documentation about Angels. I have a lot of respect for those who appeared in Angel Stories there are awesome people of God in Angel Stories. Nothing against any of the speakers at all. However, I would recommend Angel Stories to anyone, who has questions about Angels.

Angel Stories plus
5 stars because the stories are compelling and encouraging. The only thing that would make it better would be 3 or 4 additional angel stories dvds.

GUMBY: THE MOVIE

Gumby: Director's cut was better
I bought this DVD as a little treat for my birthday. I was unsure about what the director's cut would do to this movie and, despite not seeing it for a while, I knew what was going to be in it.
For the most part, the Director's Cut was a an improvement over the original. Art Clokey and the editor that helped him knew what to cut and how to do it without calling attention to itself. There were a few cuts that felt abrupt and, knowing what was supposed to come next made it obvious for me what was cut. Also, a few continuity bloopers came about due to the cutting. However, these new bloopers are not more noticable than the bloopers that were present. Most importantly, this new cut gets rid of scenes that, quite frankely, just bogged the film down and were never needed. This film works without the cut scenes and is more enjoyable than the first cut, which I enjoyed very much as well. My only big complaint was that it cut out No Buckle's (the yellow Clayboy with white hair) first big...

Gumby is Way Out in This One
Gumby, The Movie, can be viewed 1000 time and you will alway see something new. The creeky plot and acting adds to its nostalgic charm. My 3-year-old twins love it, and I even catch myself singing along from time to time. Thank goodness that Art Clokey has stayed true to his "vision", instead of trying to update his classic style.

Gumby's big-time adventure!
I just watched the Gumby movie again, and I can say that it holds up extremely well if you're a 80's Gumby fan.

This full-length movie tells the story of Gumby's attempt to create a music video with his new metal band 'The Clayboys'. This probably sounds familiar since Gumby already created videos on the 80s show with his old synth band 'The Gumbys'. I guess Gumby is obsessed with MTV.

This movie introduces us to several new characters. There are 'The Clayboys' themselves: Fatbuckle, Thinbuckle, and Nobuckle. Then there are the band's groupies, Tara and Ginger. And finally, there is the band's canine mascot Lowbelly. The Blockheads discover a special secret about Lowbelly, and they devise a scheme to use the dog to become super rich. Of course, this brings them into conflict with Gumby and his many pals.

Almost all the main characters from the 80s show are represented in this movie, with Pokey, Prickle, and Goo playing large roles. Even the...

VeggieTales Classics - God Wants Me to Forgive Them?

A great conversation-starter to watch with the kids
I bought this video today for our 3- and 1-year old kids, who love the other "Veggie Tales" they've seen. But I also bought it for myself, thinking the "Gilligan's Island" spoof would be funny, and it truly was. Larry and Bob as "The Skipper" and his little buddy were right on target - it made me embarrased to see how much I remembered about that show! The story of Junior Asparagus getting his feelings hurt by the Grapes of Wrath initiated a discussion not only about forgiveness, but also about intentional cruelty. These tapes are wonderful for starting conversations with your children concerning morals, behavior and Bible teachings. Preschoolers just beginning to understand about making a mistake or causing pain will enjoy and benefit from this video. The music, as always, is a gas.

Great movie!!!
Sorry to hear the previous buyer got a damaged copy. They should return it instead of giving the movie a bad review. This was a wonderful illustration on forgiveness. It shows how kindness and forgiveness can change the hearts of others and how good it feels to forgive, even when we are hurt. It is just another fabulous Veggie movie!

The Grapes of Wrath and a Spin off of Gilligan's Island
This is a wonderful movie especially for young children. There are two stories in this video, including "The Grapes of Wrath", which is about sort of a hick family that is very rude that Junior Asparagus sets back on the right track. The other story is Larry as "Gilligan" and Bob as "the Skipper". They use their real names in the story, but it is obvious that these are the characters they are supposed to be portraying. The whole video is about forgiveness (obviously) and how God can work in your hearts, even when you are very little.

100 Greatest Family Classics - Timeless Family Classics + Musicals

Timeless Family Classics!
A good family-friendly movie is a rare thing now of days. Mill Creek Entertainment has complied together two of their previous releases, Timeless Family Classics and Classic Musicals, into one unique bundle titled 100 Greatest Family Classics.

I've only seen a few musicals, so I was a little skeptical about reviewing Classic Musicals, but the majority of the films have other things going on for them with an occasional song and dance routine thrown into the mix. The fifty movies (on twelve double-sided discs) are from the years 1920s through to 1962; some of the films have aged a lot over the years, while others still look and sound great.

One my favorite from this set is the 1946 film Up in the Air starring Frankie Darro, Marjorie Reynolds, and Mantan Moreland. A string of murders have occurred at a local radio station. The victims are some of the most unpopular singers and performers from the radio station. A page boy and his janitor friend decided to...
