Cancelled Too Soon: Southern Fried Sassiness (And Silliness) That's Actually Quite Fun
Everything is bigger in Texas and ABC's comic soap opera "GCB" is out to prove it! Completely over-the-top (and I mean that as a compliment), this show plays to and skewers every Southern cliche imaginable. From Dallas society to religious propriety, the sharp screenplays always have their tongues planted firmly in cheek and the ten episodes of Season One are filled with scandal, infidelities, old rivalries, and even a song or two. Creator Robert Harling adapted the colorfully titled Kim Gatlin novel which doesn't abbreviate just what GCB stands for. ABC, apparently a bit shy about employing the B-word in the show's title, briefly flirted with the notion of Good Christian Belles (which sells out Gatlin's entire premise) but then settled on GCB as an appropriate compromise (and then promptly and ironically rolled out another mid-season replacement sitcom in which the B-word figured prominently in the title). Meant to recapture some of the luster of the aging and wildly uneven...
ABC Strikes Again...
As the title say...ABC has done it again. It has canceled another wonderful show filled with promise, wonderful and hilarious characters with actors like Kristen Chenoweth and Annie Potts who steals the show for me every time they are in front of the camera. I can't believe that the head of ABC has the audacity to keep tired shows like the Bachelor and Bachelorette going season after season. We all know that show has the same lame-ass formula where the couple will end up breaking up after their five-minute of fame fades away. Meanwhile shows like GCB and Missing gets cancelled without giving it a real chance to succeed but instead be included to ABC's purgatory of shows with high potential and a loyal following with such other gem of a show like Nightstalker (2007), The Gates (2010), No Ordinary Family (2010-2011) and Wipeout.
I will miss seeing GCB in fall 2012. With Desperate Housewives ending for good, what will Sunday be like without the hilarious Ms. Chenoweth, the...
Sharp Wit, Great Acting, and Southern Accents
I've been a Kristin Chenoweth fan since "Pushing Daisies." Her amazing performance of Olive Snook made her a scene-stealer, to say the least. Since then, I've been purchasing her albums, seeing her shows, etc., but I couldn't wait to see her return on TV. I didn't really know what GCB would be like, but Kristin's appearance in it was enough to spark my interest.
GCB, originally titled "Good Christian Bitches," quickly became one of my favorite new shows. Along with Chenoweth, the series stars Leslie Bibb, the amazing Annie Potts, as well as a cavalcade of more talent. The shows sharp wit provides a take on all the "Holier than Thou" people in our lives, as well as a play on the Texan stereotype. It's not in the least bit offensive, just hilarious. After the conviction of her husband, a business man who played the old Ponzi-Scheme, Amanda (Leslie Bibb) returns to her hometown in Texas to live with her mother and children. There she finds her former classmates, who she tortured,...
